Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Sweaters

A Cozy Pillow Made from a Red SweaterWhen the time comes to say goodbye to your favorite old sweater, it may be extremely tough to let go. By good luck, even if you can’t wear your sweater any longer, you don’t have to give it up! Preferably, consider upcycling your sweater into something else with a fun do-it-yourself project. Here are some easy, creative ways to repurpose old sweaters into things you can use all winter long!

Cozy mittens. Producing a pair of warm winter mittens out of an old sweater is easy and fun! Just outline your hands in chalk around the bottom edge of a sweater, creating the outline about 1/4 inch bigger than your hand. Next, cut out the pieces. After that, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving the bottom edge open. Flip your new mittens right side out and enjoy!

Decorative pillow. Nothing says comfy like a sweater-covered decorative pillow for your Goodlettsville home! To make a pillow from an old sweater, just get a pillow for reference and cut the sweater to size. At that point, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving enough room on one side to place the pillow inside. Then stitch the opening shut and add buttons or other ornamental stuff.

Fingerless gloves. Another great way to repurpose an old sweater is to use it to craft fingerless gloves! Both attractive and functional, a pair of fingerless gloves can help you stay warm in freezing weather while enabling you to type or swipe on your phone. Begin by cutting the sleeves off the sweater to any height you desire. Next, make a hole for your thumbs. That’s it! Nice fingerless gloves you can utilize in every season!

Boot toppers. Another styling option for upcycling an old sweater is to make some pretty boot toppers. Boot toppers may aid in keeping your legs warm and protect your legs from rough seams or zippers. To craft boot toppers, just cut the upper sleeve off an old sweater long enough to fit your calf and then fold the extra material over the top of your boot.

Headband. A headband is another enjoyable and beneficial craft you can produce out of an old sweater. You can create your headband as thin or as wide as you want or produce more than one for more options. Start cutting a strip from the sweater in your preferred width, then stitch the ends together to fit your head. Coziness and elegance in an instant!

Pocket hand warmers. One essential thing you can take with you to stay warm in cold weather is a pocket hand warmer. To craft one out of a sweater, cut several squares from a sweater arm or band, turn inside out, and stitch up the sides. Make a little opening and fill with dried beans, lentils, or pie weights. You can also incorporate buckwheat and dried lavender for a pleasant scent. Ultimately, close the opening, heat in the microwave, and slide into a pocket for toasty warm fingers!

Smartphone case. The possibilities are that your personal tech gadgets don’t like being cold any more than you do! Protect them and repurpose an old sweater at once by making a simple smartphone or tablet case. Trace your tech device with chalk on the sweater, then turn inside out and sew, leaving one edge open. Attach a button or other decorations for a cute and functional result!

Sweater wreath. Upcycled sweaters can be attractive and functional when you build a fun sweater wreath for your house. Using a foam or other wreath form, cut and sew your old sweater around the form to generate a lovely wreath. Add some nice-looking ribbon or other small details, and you will have a wreath you can enjoy all season long – and beyond!
